Not Good

So uh… the hard drive on my laptop died yesterday. After excessive consultation with people who are smarter than me I surveyed my options and decided that I am buying a new laptop. More consultation with said smart people led me through my options and pricing and such. I will be buying one today.

Woof. Not Cheap.

That sucks hard, but now that you know what you are doing I guess it would be easiest to just embrace that you will be getting a brand new computer that runs smooth as butter?

I know I’m holding on to that thought about my work computer. We install it, along with an entirely new network, on Sunday. Dreamy. Not only will I make contract hours on the side at almost twice my regular wage – I will come in Monday morning to technology that fucking works!

I will be in Oakland on the 28th of Rocktober for a really cool bellydance show…*ya’ wanna go? You don’t need a computer.

My laptop is 5 years old. Laptops do not have a long lifespan. It is quirky; many things don’t work. The casing is breaking…. I would end up replacing just about everything in order to baby it through. Eventually it is the same decision as repairing an old car or buying a new one. When does the cost analysis change?

I have a hard drive for your model Laptop, if you want it. 20 Gb, I think. It’s Easy to install and I have all the software you might need to get it up and running again.

Dunno how carefully you’ve shopped, or if you can afford to wait across a weekend, but my usual advertising watching has been turning up very usable low-price laptops in the $499-599 range (you’d wanna spend $150 on a ram upgrade immediately). Tax and service contract and you’re up close to $1000. Which is a big chunk of money, but very likely less than the $2000 that a very casual glance at what’s out there might have turned up.

Not a lot that I’ve seen in the last couple of days, but the weekend ads for Fry’s and CompUSA usualy turn up one or two. Have been consistenly for months.
