Scanned through the course evaluations briefly. One kid said I should swear less. One kid said I should be less emotional. Two kids in my seventh period ripped me a new one saying that the class sucked and they hate me. Well, those two kids are the ones who want special treatment at all times about everything and I just won’t do it. (For those who know the stories: one was the girl who is in training to be a trophy wife.)
Other than that, people say my class was really good and they appreciate how much effort I put in. Not bad really.
Yay! Obviously, you rock.
when i taught i used to stress over every, little negative comment.
then i realized i was teaching the damned class and they were all gone.
hooray for you!
Memories
I remember being struck by this when I was in highshool…
We were filling out course evaluations for some class or other, and the teacher left the room while we did it. I remember some of my classmates joking and laughing with eachother about the more and more awful things they could conceive of to put in the evaluations. It struck me as sort of mean, especially when I later heard that one teacher (don’t actually remember for certain if it was the same one) had been reduced to tears over a few of their evaluations. Though they all had strengths and weaknesses, none of my teachers were bad, and all were well meaning and reasonably friendly. Certainly none deserved the sort of thoughtless and exagerated criticism that they received from (luckily) the minority.
It also struck me as a bit ironic since many of the same folks are the sort to say things like “I just got a bad grade because the teacher hates me.” Probably never true, but I guess I can see why it seemed plausible to them…
Anyways– moral of the story is that statistically speaking, Noah is probably right and you rock. Otherwise, most students wouldn’t like your class and appreciate your effort. Don’t make the mistake of assuming all the comments are valid or based on reality. It doesn’t sound like you’re in danger of that, so I guess I just thought I’d share the story. 🙂
