Fucking hippy.

Before anyone gets their back up… I’m talking about me.

I just spent an hour of precious nap time (it’s when I can get up and do stuff unfettered) hanging rope in the backyard and putting diapers up to line dry. I’m line drying my fucking cloth diapers. What happened to my life?!!

Before anyone asks why: the sun is a natural bleach. Diapers, even well washed diapers, eventually start to look like they are catching what they are catching. 🙂 The cloth diaper freaks all swear by line drying to keep diapers unstained so I am giving it a shot.

The real kicker? I raided the toybag for the rope and clothespins. At least I didn’t have to cut up my zippers.

(I need a dirty hippy icon. Or a 50’s housewife. In fetish gear. Hmmmmm….)

Personally, I’d like to see a black and white photo with you in an apron, pearls, and high heels a la Mrs. Cleaver – though without the dress. The thought appeals to my sense of whimsy.

On an unrelated note, I never heard back from you on the email I sent. Should I presume that it’s a no-go then?

You should presume that I am lame and have a weird block about responding to emails. I don’t know why I can handle lj comments.

      I’ll go respond.

Don’t diaper services exist anymore? That would be a damn shame. I loved my diaper service — setting out a big stinky bag of shitty diapers on Wednesday night and waking up Thursday morning to find them magically transformed into a pristine bag of white folded sanitized diapers.

Another reason (for me) is that diaper services use really harsh detergents. I can wash my prefolds in my HE washer’s sanitary cycle with a tablespoon of biodegradable detergent and a 1/3 cup or so of white vinegar and get a perfectly clean diaper out of it. And I don’t keep diapers around for a whole week. A couple of days is plenty.

A couple of reasons. Diaper services don’t cost less than using disposable. With cloth you buy a set and I’ll use them through two or three kids and many of the diapers will still be in decent condition so I will probably sell/hand them off.

But most importantly, diaper services use prefolds and only prefolds. We use all in ones from Swaddlebees: http://swaddlebees.com/products/aio/aio2 and BumGenius http://www.bumgenius.com/one-size.php and a few contours by Kissaluvs http://www.kissaluvs.com/countour-diapers.html. It looks like as we move up a size I will move towards all BumGenius because that way I can sell the current size and use them for the whole diapering time. There are a few other brands I’m debating trying two or three of before I move to all BG. 🙂

It’s really not hard to do the laundry. Breastfed poop isn’t a big deal. Once he is closer to starting solids I am going to be a lot more motivated to do EC and get her out of diapers. 🙂

I’d been kicking around the idea of cloth diapers if I have another baby, but I just can’t seem to wrap my head around that one. LOL.

However, I’ve also heard the same about line-drying clothes – and not just diapers. Supposedly, it’s better for them and will make them last longer because they’re not getting all beat up in the dryer drum. Not to mention the electricity savings. 🙂
