Today I tried new-to-me food. I had: pumpkin pie (it’s decent), pecan pie (WHAT WAS I THINKING NOT EATING THIS YEARS AGO?! It’s soooooooooooooo good), red tuna (not oh-my-god good, but I’ll eat it again), salmon (same as the red tuna), eel (creepy icki texture I don’t need in my mouth again), white tuna (it grossed me out enough I couldn’t eat the whole piece), a California roll (not incredible but I could learn to like it), and inari (very awesome).
For those of you who are asking yourselves why I am posting about this, I have declared loudly for years that I don’t eat anything that lives in water. This was a huge huge huge deal for me. I think I should get a prize of some kind.
I did all this fish tasting after a really good day at Dickens Fair. I have some really awesome friends. I don’t get to see any of them enough.
pumpkin pie varies from bland to very tasty depending on the recipie, so if it was ‘decent’ you should try it at other places and see if you like there’s better. It fell into the catagory of things I would not touch as a kid but got reintroduced to at a place that did it well so I changed my stance. This stance included sweet potatoe pie which I have also changed my mind about.
Mrs. Smiths (the frozen brand) actually does a decent pumpkin pie. I kind of figure that since it and sweet potatoe are in the healthier pies I should make myself like them even though you couldn’t have paid me to eat them as a kid.
HATE eel, its up there with sardines which I will also not eat.
Wow, you’re especially adventurous plunging directly to sushi for your first fish experience. Prize awarded.
Pecan pie is something I remember being afraid to try when I was small, but one taste and I was hooked for life.
That’s an amazing collection of taste experiences. If you were okay with Inari, you might also consider Tomago. When we go out to sushi, I pretty much always get edamame, inari, tomago, ebi tempura, and miso soup. I’m a cheap date that way.
I don’t particularly care for pumpkin….I think in large part because it’s ALL we ever had for thanksgiving/christmas desserts, and I’m utterly sick of it.
I do make a WICKED good pecan pie, and I’m actually sort of surprised you haven’t had it!
The “fishiest” thing about sushi is the NORI (seaweed), honestly. I quite enjoy it now, though. Sushi, that is. Nori is still more in the category of tolerate. 🙂
