Thank god for modern medicine

Lots of the uber-crunchy folks are against Tylenol. I was a nasty, cranky bitch for most of the morning because I am having a really rough period. I took two Tylenol and I am down to being a little fussy. It’s worth losing the crunchy points. 😛

I don’t have any issues with it — the opiates I take are loaded with it — I’ve just never found that it makes a damn bit of difference in any pain I’ve ever had. Good for fevers, though.

I personally, when I was first exposed to Advil when it was still perscription only, felt it was proof of the existance of G-d

Roughly 42% of 662 patients with acute liver failure, the primary cause of the liver failure was acetaminophen (tylenol) overuse (source). Tylenol is, if anything, one of the two least safe of the OTC painkiller spectrum. Aspirin can have bad effects on blood pressure and pH, Tylenol does far more liver damage than the others, while NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen sodium can, in very high doses (3,200 mg per day for an adult is the maximum recommended intake, and is well below the hazard level), cause stomach ulceration (source).

I’ll take GI ulcers over liver failure.

Any stats on liver damage from chronic low-level use, or from occasional low-level use? I’d not avoid a drug because in large doses it can be dangerous – all drugs are dangerous in large doses.

First sentence: “Taken properly, Tylenol (acetaminophen) is a safe painkiller. But taking too much Tylenol can lead to liver failure.”

Same can be said of Jack Daniels…

Something about using the right tool for the job. 🙂 I’m willing to treat my allergies and colds with as little in the way of modern drugs as I can get away with. And I’m aware that my herbal stuff (and food, and chocolate…) are technically drugs. But cramps get ibuprofen, so do muscle aches or anything else where I want to proactively hold off inflammatory responses. Colds get lots of tea, while UTIs get a hit of antibiotics.

    I prefer pragmatically crunchy. :p

And yay for mildly fussy vs. miserable.
