Future tripping as avoidance

I was talking to someone about FOGcon. It is in March. http://fogcon.org/ I’m considering going, mostly because I know so many people on staff. They are all people I trust and I believe that if I had an issue that is a group of people who would make sure I was ok.

They have child care on site…

My mom attended last year. She recently wrote an urban fantasy novel and wanted to check it out. She enjoyed it but felt like it was a bunch of cliques and didn’t get much out of it.
She wrote a blog post about it. Here is her blog:

Hmmm. I think I am going to risk trying it this year.

All cons are cliqueish by nature, because the people who start and run them are usually a group of friends, who want to do a thing. So it’s a little scary to me to try this at all, because yeah – exclusion at cliques is something I’ve had far to much of.

But, this con is small, local, and run by people I know and think well of. It might be a safe environment for me to spend some time in on a weekend. That is a lot more than I can say for most spaces.

It is likely to not be hateful and actively toxic, and that’s a big step up for my time spending.

And I’m thinking… maybe I will encounter local people who don’t suck. Then I can put them on my list of people to ping about hiking/walking/some activity or common thing. Maybe I can expand my horizons. It’s worth a try.

I figure if I haven’t done it before and it’s not actively toxic or problematic, it can’t hurt for me to try.

I went last year and had a great time – including the shifts I took helping out in childcare.

I’d love to see you there. I might actually get a room and just *go*, too, this year.
