Apparently shit like Renaissance Faires *are* cultural for me.
My mom thought she was more than half German. I don’t think that’s possible if I’m only 13.7% French/German. My grandfather wasn’t wrong about there being someone non-white somewhere in the family tree.
I’m pretty excited about this. I’m very British apparently. I’m wondering if the 26.4% Broadly Northwestern European is Scottish. This would lend some support to the stories about my family being British colonialists.
Neato what service did you use? I did Ancestry DNA and I’m whiter than I thought too. The proportions my parents thought I was we’re way off.
We did 23 and me.
I did both 23andme and AncestryDNA–for me they turned out pretty similarly.
FWIW, the British and Irish category includes Scottish (and Scots-Irish). I’m more than half British & Irish and just about all of that from my mother’s side is probably Scots-Irish. The “Broadly Northwest European” category isn’t a missing group, it’s all the stuff that can’t be assigned to just one sub-group. In mine, the continental stuff does seem to have a larger percentage unassigned than the British & Irish grouping for whatever reason, but yeah, your mom probably wasn’t half German.

Ive been very tempted to do 23 and me for a long time.
What I really want is a test that looks for obscure genetic markers my docs havent thought to look for. Maybe someday.

Michele – Elaine did it as well and found some genetic markers that she’s doing something about and, as such, is now off most medications she had been on for years (with crappy side effects).
I expected to be more all over the place. I was shocked it was so… mostly one place.
That’s incredibly cool that Elaine has had such good response from doing this test. Yay for fewer side effects.
