No one told me that “teething” meant that each individual tooth could take a week or maybe a month to come in. No one told me that during teething she would get a terrible diaper rash, have a runny nose, and not be able to sleep consistently for a week (so far). Ok, I sorta knew those things about teething, but my kid has been so darn easy up to this point that I didn’t think it would be so bad. This is our first bout of sleep deprivation and I get the impression that we still may have it easy. Last night out of desperation we swaddled her so that she would go to sleep. It worked pretty well until about 1am and then didn’t work anymore. She has always hated swaddling, from when she was tiny so I’m surprised it worked at all. We are also going 100% diaper free for a while in efforts to help with diaper rash. Trying EC full-time is kind of scary, but we did go all night without her wetting the bed! Yay! I’m just nervous because she hasn’t pooped yet and she’s due. Missing pee doesn’t bother me much; I really don’t want poop all over the floor. ick. So I’m pottying her every 15 minutes. heh. Aunt Sarah also gave us some teething tablets; I’m not sure if they are helping or not but she is a bit happier today. Given how many things we are trying at once it’s hard to tell what is doing what.
It doesn’t help that I now have a stuffy nose and sore throat. Bodies kind of suck.
For the teething discomfort, have you tried
http://www.anbesol.com/baby/index.asp
and/or maybe a frozen damp washcloth to chew on?
Re: For the teething discomfort, have you tried
We do give her frozen stuff, but I’m going to pass on the medication. Thanks anyway.
Re: For the teething discomfort, have you tried
I seem to remember hearing that bagels are good for teething as well… not that I have any valid experience myself.
Re: For the teething discomfort, have you tried
I understand about trying to avoid giving her medications that aren’t strenuously necessary.
Glad you already knew about using frozen stuff.
Wish I had other helpful ideas, and anyway wishing you luck; I know that even though everybody goes through it, it can be trying.
Re: For the teething discomfort, have you tried
Don’t know if you consider it “medication,” but the old folk remedy of rubbing a bit of whisky or brandy on the sore place actually did seem to help my guys.
Re: For the teething discomfort, have you tried
I’m more likely to do this, but we haven’t yet. The chamomile teething tablets have been good enough so far.
I probably will get to it though. 🙂
Good luck hon! I havent been through this yet as my little one is only a month old. But it seems like your doing a great job. Hope you both feel better. *hugs*
One month! That’s exciting! And man your kidlet has a lot of hair. 🙂
my kids teethed on sticks of hard salami.
they liked the taste and so chewed wth gusto.
made them smell a little garlic-y, though…
If we were giving her meat yet that would be awesome.
mine weren’t anywhere near meat-eating at the time. then again, maybe they were. all that stuff kinda runs together after a while.
thinking back, though, it did make them turn their noses up at run-of-the-mill baby eats for some time. it think, maybe, they grew used to the zest of the salami.
i know we’d also rub their gums fairly hard with the back of a cold spoon. they’d Scream Like Fuck for about 10 seconds afterward and then be ok for several hours after.
i didn’t like doing that.
Re: teething…
We have a good teething ring. She is not yet old enough for wheat so the toast isn’t going to work out. And even the “very safe” ingredients (benzocaine, FD&C red #40, flavor, glycerin, polyethylene glycols, purified water, sodium saccharin, sorbic acid, sorbitol ) aren’t things I really want in her body at this point.
Thanks anyway.
