It is starting to warm up a little and I am completely sick of wearing stretch pants and t-shirts every single damn day. Maternity jeans are not terribly comfortable. I want dresses. Before you tell me ebay–I’ve looked. I don’t like the selection in my size. Which means I am looking around online because every store I walk in to has 2-3 dresses and they’re ugly. I have a pretty good idea of what styles/cuts work on my frame but I’m having trouble justifying this outrageous cost to myself. Yet… dude. Some of these are damn cute.

They’re cute, especially #2. But if I may make a suggestion: when I was pregnant, my standard dress-up outfits all consisted of a loose tunic or smock over a slim, inexpensive maternity skirt. I had a couple of tunics made — the fabric plus the fee to a seamstress came to about what I’d have paid for retail maternity wear — and bought a couple of skirts at retail. After the babies, I tossed the skirts, switched to loose pants, and had outfits that worked fine for nursing. (And you’ll notice that 30 years later, I still often dress in a loose tunic over leggings or a slim skirt — it’s just a flattering look on me, pregnant or no.)
If you visit Folkwear Patterns at http://www.folkwear.com, there are several great smocks and tunics, some of which can also be made up as dresses. Given that Folkwear designs its patterns from typical peasant and farmer patterns, and that peasant-type women don’t really have the luxury of separate wardrobes for pregnancy and nursing, they all adapt easily. I made their Prairie Dress in several different fabrics and wore them for years.
I love the six-way, that’s a great way to get more bang for your buck, and I tend to think you can dress something up like that a million different ways, or tone it down/make it fun too – you know?
I also like the others, 2nd choice was the first one. The last didn’t turn me on as much.
The funny thing is: #4 is my favorite. 🙂

Weirdly, I hate the two multiway ones. I think I like #4 best, but personally can’t see putting mom-boobs in a strapless dress and having them look remotely decent. So I think that leaves #2.
I hadn’t thought about the strapless aspect. I’m pretty busty and I can wear a strapless, but I imagine mom boobs hang a little heavier. Otherwise, I really like it. I can really see Krissy twirling :o)
I wasn’t so fond of #2 ’cause it’s long sleeve so it wouldn’t really be cooler.

It just occurred to me that I’m totally jealous that, “it’s started to warm up a little”.
WTF? Really? I keep walking outside to the same damn pouring down rain everyday … cold, wet, soggy. *sad*
The fact that #3 has “options to cater with breastfeeding” makes me giggle. Just the idea of breastfeeding being ‘catered’. Okay, maybe it’s just me.
I know there are some very inexpensive and nice/simple dress patterns through Simplicity and Butterick. Do you know a seamstress who works relatively inexpensively or for barter? Having something in fabric you choose, or with even the slightest bit of custom fit/construction might help you be really happy with the choice too.
And yes, I really like #4 in the white.
I also have a friend who is a seriously kick ass seamstress. She can make, literally, anything you want and won’t charge too much to do it.
She can even do it in fun fur.
