So. I have occasionally mentioned in small settings that I have an interest in teaching abroad when I finish school next year. I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on this. I have begun doing research on the possibilities that exist and it looks like Asia may be the best idea. Japan is looking very interesting. I know that some of you have connections with people who are currently teaching in Japan. Is it possible for me to get contact info?
Uhm. Life is interesting. I wonder where it is going to take me…
I taught a year in China and still have connections there if you are interested. I’ve had friends who have gone to Japan and I’ve heard some good and indifferent things about it. Keep in touch where ever you go. I’d love to hear about your adventures abroad.
Can you imagine ~me~ deserting my faithful readers?
*Grin*
Miss Mary Anne Bright (Marion) has taught in China, Turkey, and is in Ecuador. She’d probably have good contacts and information for you.
I have a friend who is currently teaching English in Japan. She’s a British woman – about your age, come to think of it. You’d love her. I think her program is called JET – mark and I looked into it at one point. It’s definitely an experience.
here’s the LJ of a friend currently in the JET program

She writes a lot about her experiences there.
She is also a friend of Vicki and many others in that circle, so it may be OK to contact her directly to talk about it.
Be careful about it, there are a lot of sheister companies that will pay you nothing, house you badly and it will generally be a bad time. The government brings in Americans to teach english but again they pay little. Your teaching degree specializing in English should afford you better than that.
Yeah. Talia ( is doing this, and it’s worked well for her. She could put you in contact with better companies – GEOS and something-or-other?
My mother taught army brats in germany… she was a civilian employee of the army. I could ask…
What do you teach? I can give high recommendations for Singapore, and some contacts at a university there if it’s of interest.
My friend taught there for six months or a year, I can’t remember which. Let me know if you want his contact info.
My good friend is in Japan teaching English right now. He posts about it on his blog… Check it out.
