Reading.

I haven’t read much in a few years.  I would say that I haven’t read a book a month in years.  I think I should do a book a week.  Rereads are fine.  Kids books are ok as long as they are long chapter books.  I’m going to count graphic novels just because it makes Noah happy for me to read them.  Before I was willing to post about this I tried it for a month very quietly.  It worked!  Here’s what I read in January:
Girl Genius by Kaja and Phil Foglio volumes 1-9 in paper.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
A Little Princess also by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I read like my friends start knitting projects.  These are the ones I am in progress on:

Hideous kinky by Esther Freud
Autobiography of Mark Twain by… Mark Twain.  This one is going to be a slog.  Holy moly.  I’ve been working on it for weeks.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Neverwhere by Neil Gaimon
Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaimon (this is the one Noah is reading me)
The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice  (I don’t want to talk about it.)
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle or something like that.  The Kingsolver one.

I need to change the stories in my head.  Time for distraction.  It’s making it hella hard to edit my book.  It’s too sad.

I really liked that Kingsolver book. If you like that sort of thing (the providing-for-oneself-off-one’s-own-land kind of thing), I will send you my copy of Novella Carpenter’s “Farm City” – very similar to Kingsolver’s book, but no kids and in a very urban area. I’ve also got Michael Perry’s “Coop”, which I liked a little less than the other two, but I think that was just me being done with the topic for a bit.

Right now, I’m working through “Napoleon’s Pyramids” by William Dietrich (I’m 3/4 of the way through, still with mixed feelings about it), “The Scar” by China Mieville (rather liking it so far), “The Passage” by Justin Cronin, and “Mockingbird” by Kathryn Erskine.

It finally clicked that you’re counting books so I came back here to see what you were doing. Especially since I’m starting a reading project too! 50 Books by people of color. I am totally counting (2 so far) the children’s stories that I’m reading to my roommate’s kids. I was amused by someone who kept stats, I think I will too. So far two men two women. Finished Zora Neal Hurston today “Their Eyes were Watching God.

Ooooh I love Frances Hogsdon Burnett. I re-read those allllll the time, esp TLP. I have my preferred illustrator for each one too. If you want another one in that vein, I also enjoyed Little Lord Fauntelroy. All three are on Gutenberg. (Possibly Australia if not US.) And of course, Austen’s P&P is the classic. Hmm. I may not have seriously read any of her other ones. Even though I’ve read at least 3-5 Dickens. Hm.

I like the Kingsolver book too! Read it years ago, copied down the Chocolate Chip Zucchini recipe, which I’ve passed around to many people though I’ve never made it myself. It’s on my mental bookshelf of “Mindful Food” with Michael Pollan.

I’m using my goodreads account to keep track, I think a lot of the 50POC people from LJ are doing that, it’s fun.

    Hugs,
    Debs
